Praia Ingleses – Florianopolis, Brazil

Well I made it to Brazil!! Since my last post I was in Buenos Aires and Pinamar, Argentina for two weeks living it up with some great new friends and spending a lot of time in the sun. On Thursday, Jan 17th I made my way to São Paolo, Brazil to visit a friend that I met at a hostel in Buenos Aires during Christmas and to do a few things in the city before starting my 5-week trip. I spent two nights at my friends house, did a walking tour of Paulista Avenue (the main tourist street and connector to a bunch of other popular spots) with a friend that I met over Instagram and his girlfriend.

Bueno, llegué a Brasil!! Desde mi última entrada, estuve en Buenos Aires y Pinamar por 2 semanas viviendo como una reina con algunos nuevos amigos y pasando mucho tiempo en el sol. El jueves, 17 de enero me fui de Argentina a São Paolo, Brasil a visitar un amigo que conocí en Buenos Aires durante la Navidad y para hacer unas cosas en la ciudad antes de empezar mi viaje de 5 semanas. Me quedé 2 noches en la casa de mi amigo y di una vuelta caminando por Avenida de Paulista (la calle principal de la zona turistica y que se conecta a otros lugares importantes) con un amigo y su novia que conocí por Instagram.

After leaving São Paolo, I got on a plane on Saturday, Jan 19th to Florianopolis. It’s a beautiful island that is connected by a bridge to mainland Brazil in the South East of Brazil. Here I booked a hostel for the first two nights in a rural, hippy beach zone called Barra do Lagoa (Neighbourhood of the Lake). I really didn’t know anything about Florianopolis, and the only real reason that I came here is that I heard it was beautiful, fun and my Australian friends that I met last year in Mexico were going to be here at the same time. So why not? I had to check it out.

Little did I know that the island is huge and has really poor public transportation. Being the “savvy-backpacker” that I am (haha just kidding, this was a first), I decided to take the bus from the airport to my hostel as it seemed pretty straight forward. Wrong. It took me 3 public buses that didn’t have a single tourist on them, and to go 18 km took me almost 2.5 hours. Lesson learned. Do some research on a place before arriving! Anyways I made it, got off the bus, walked about 500m with all my bags over a pedestrian bridge and up a windy little alley to my hostel, Banana Beach Hostel. It was very welcoming, had a great vibe and right away I met a bunch of super friendly people from South Africa, Finland, Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay.

Después de irme de São Paolo, tomé un vuelo el sabado 19 de enero a Florianópolis. Es una linda isla que esta conectada a la costa de Brasil por un gran puente. La isla queda en el sud este del país. Acá reservé un hostel por mis primeras 2 noches en un barrio muy hippy y rustíco que se llama Barra do Lagoa. En realidad no sabía nada de Florianópolis, pero la única razón que venía fue por que escuchaba que era muy linda y que mis amigos Australianos que conocí el año pasado en Mexico, iban a estar aquí al mismo tiempo. Entonces porque no? Tenía que conocerla.

Yo no sabía nada de Floripa y que era una isla muy grande y con transporte público muy malo. Siendo la “pobre mochilera” que soy (jaja estoy bromeando, fue la primera vez que quería ahorrar dinero) tomé el colectivo desde el aeropuerto hacia mi primer hostel que me parecía facíl. Me equivoqué. Me demoró casi 2.5 horas para llegar 18km en 3 colectivos y después caminando 500m con todas mis valijas por un puente peatonal y subiendo un callejón hasta mi hostel Banana Beach. Aprendí mi lección jaja. Cuando llegué por lo menos toda la gente ahí era muy simpatíca y el lugar tenía mucha onda. En muy poco tiempo conocí gente de Sud Afríca, Finlandía, Brasil, Uruguay y Argentina.

Barra do Lagoa

Hostel Life

After two nights in the first hostel, I made my way to the north of the island with my Uruguayan and Brazilian friend to a different hostel. The area that we were in before had nothing except a beach and some restaurants. Not even a bank. Nice for two days, but for anyone that knows me, it was a little too “sleepy”.

In the North, I got to meet up with my Australian friends who rented a house about 8km from where my second hostel was. We went to a pool party that reminded me of the ones that they have in Vegas, which was fun, but could have had better music and a few more people. The venue had a lot of potential though, and I think we are going back this coming weekend

So what have we done so far? Well I went with the boys to a beach on another part of the island called Praia do Igleses.

Después de dos noches en el primer hostel me fui al norte de la isla con mi amigo Uruguayo y mi amiga Brasileña a otro hostel. En el primer barrio (Barra do Lagoa) no había nada más de una playa muy linda y algunos restaurantes. Ni un banco! Lindo por dos días pero por ellos que me conocen, era bastante “dormido” para mi.

En el norte de la isla yo encontré a mis amigos Australianos quienes alquilaron una casa unos 8km desde mi segundo hostel. Fuimos a una fiesta de piscina que me acordaba de las fiestas en Las Vegas que era divertida pero podría tener mejor música y más gente. El lugar tenía potencia para arrancar una muy buena fiesta entonces vamos a ir otra vez el sabado que viene.

Entonces que he hecho ya? Fui con los chicos a una playa muy linda en otra parte de la isla que se llama Praia do Igleses.
